Lighting defines a space’s mood almost entirely: warm and welcoming, cool and calming, even energizing enough to sharpen focus. And sometimes, when it comes to lighting design, simplicity belies a surprising degree of complexity.
Modular Lighting Instruments is proud to present a refreshed take on an iconic collection of fixtures – the Impulse Collection by Belgian designer Maarten De Ceulaer – originally born from an experiment observing how LED light behaves and disperses. Updated for 2025, De Ceulaer partnered once again with Modular Lighting Instruments to expand and refine the collection, which is now available in every RAL color, opening the door to unprecedented customization.
For those seeking guidance within that expansive palette, De Ceulaer—recently named Knack/Le Vif Weekend Designer of the Year—has curated three modern hues designed to integrate effortlessly into a wide range of interiors: RAL 6019 Matt (white green), RAL 3012 Struc (beige red), and RAL 6004 Glossy (blue green).
The ingenuity of the design lies in its poetic restraint. Inspired by the moment a hand passes over a line of LEDs – casting multiple, layered shadows onto a wall – the Impulse collection transforms a simple light source into an atmospheric experience.
Abstract geometric forms, available in both round and square configurations, house a linear light that creates subtle gradients of illumination and shadow. Rather than minimizing these irregularities, the design elevates them, allowing layered shadows to become the focal point—an almost halo-like energy radiating outward from the fixture’s core.
The collaboration between Modular Lighting Instruments and De Ceulaer feels instinctive, rooted in a shared commitment to architectural lighting and an enduring curiosity about how light shapes space.
“I wanted the shape of the fixture to be as minimal as possible. All attention should go to the play of light and shadow, without distraction,” says De Ceulaer. The result is an object that feels both functional and poetic—immersive without being intrusive—where the mechanics quietly recede, leaving only the carefully choreographed interplay of light, shadow, and surface.
