While wood tends to denote a warmth and nature’s resilience, metal evokes minimalist refinement and the precision of industrial production. When paired, these ubiquitous yet constantly redefined materials take on new proprietary and iconographic dimensions. These seemingly disparate elements—polar opposites one might think—end up complementing each other in surprising ways. One anchors and—if introduced carefully—doesn’t have to overpower the other. As evident in multifaceted Danish design brand Vipp’s just released V2 Kitchen, powder-coated steel can carry mid-tone oak and vice versa. The former can plays-off the subtle graining of the latter.
In an unexpected turn, it’s actually the wood that forms the shell of the particularly slender cabinet and counter island system. Metal is implemented as the base structure but also as accents: the thin legs, cabinet push-click pulls and anodized aluminum and doors; rendered in an extruded, low relief fluted pattern. Borrowed from sister product, the V3, this distinctive feature imbues the design with a clean, repeated vertical rhythm of form and shimmering light refraction.
Why shouldn’t a kitchen island take-on the meticulous detail of a carefully considered furnishing; perhaps even a credenza. With the addition of wood to its palette, Vipp is furthering this mission; changing the perception of what this type of essential domestic element can be. Each of its kitchen concepts are freestanding—resembling a credenza in profile—and unlike conventional built-outs, can be transposed. The systems can be brought along when one moves house. In the same respect, the system—available as narrow island, full island, or wall configuration—blends in seamlessly with a broad range of interior styles. Though decidedly modern and pared back, the design is universal enough to become a chameleon, adapting to different space.
“We wanted the V2 to feel unmistakably Vipp and yet offer a new warmth in both touch and tone,” says Kasper Egelund, CEO and the third generation owner of the widely celebrated boutique producer, as known for their guesthouse destinations spread across the globe. “It’s a natural progression in our kitchen family—familiar in construction but distinctly different in expression.”
Naturally, V2 comes in two variants— light and dark—demonstrating the breath in applicability of this fresh proposition. Both versions demonstrate the deft and balanced interplay of these two material categories. When it comes to practicality and efficiency, the system’s especially robust, precision-welded 20 mm stainless steel worktop—folded from a single sheet with squared edges—is meant to be used and scratched up. This intended function reflects a philosophy of honest design that concedes the fact that pristine objects will eventually succumb to wear and tear. That doesn’t mean that V2 will lose value but rather the opposite. Through use, and the evidence thereof, it will become more personalized, imbued with multiple stories; that one legendary dinner party or the romantic evenings cooking at home that changed everything.
