Long-established New York gallery The Future Perfect has been at the forefront of several seismic shifts in the ever-evolving U.S. design industry, especially as the collectible design sector gained traction. It served as a vital platform for the “autonomous studio” scene that emerged post 2008 recession and as one of the first East Coast platforms to expand with outposts on the West Coast. Concurrently, It helped spawn the trend of setting up shop in distinctive historic homes; cleverly displaying in-situ a diverse range of limited edition and one-off designs by its extensive roster of talents.
In 2019, it moved from its long-held East Village storefront into a comprehensively styled, David Chipperfeld-renovated West Village brownstone. Here the various domestic settings are used as ideal, consistent backdrops for the unveiling of vastly different collections. The approach has been carried across to other meticulously chosen locales. During Miami Art + Design Week, 2025, the gallery opened an outpost in the historic, and haunted, Villa Paula. A San Francisco space has been operating for close to a decade.
In Los Angeles, The Future Perfect has taken up residence at several iconic mansions over the years but has been firmly rooted at the emblematic Goldwyn House since 2022. Just in time for this year’s Frieze L.A. fair week—exhibiting a bevy of new launches and specially curated vignette showcases—the locale underwent a complete restaging.
“This moment marks a significant transformation for us,” says founder David Alhadeff. “With the full refresh of The Goldwyn House and the first public unveiling of its private quarters, we wanted to create an experience that feels lived-in and intimate, ultimately, closer to how design actually functions in our lives.”
On view till April 20 in the expanded home exhibition setting and its surrounding grounds is an eclectic array of functional and semi-functional sculptures, new lighting designs, ceramics, textiles, and other accessories; an offering that not only paints a full picture of The Future Perfect’s range but perhaps also the state of contemporary design, certainly from an international standpoint.
One of the autonomous practices that Alhadeff helped launch back in the day is Lindsey Adelman, the widely celebrated decorative lighting designer. At The Goldwyn House this spring, she’s unveiling the Hieros Gamos collection. The bespoke suspended mobiles and two sconce stem from the established talent’s ongoing exploration of alchemy and mythicism. The incorporated glass orbs—adorned in hand-drawn and gold enameled symbols—ceramic canopies, and carefully sourced crystal combine to express both masculine and feminine energies.
“I want it to feel like there’s something very present day about the structure of these [designs] and the sensibility of them but that they are dipping into a primitive world that’s always been there, one where you can feel the beginning of us, one that feels very much with us now.” Adelman said. “Each fixture will feel like a world unto itself, and at The Future Perfect, they’ll be arranged in a way that allows them to speak to one another.”
While British designer Bethan Laura Wood’s Extra Trimmings settees—presented pool side—demonstrate a more minimalist and ornamental interpretation of experimental weaving brand Shore Studios central solution, Collection Particulière’s first-time-in-the-US desk and sofa take pride of place in the media room. Boutique Portuguese producer De La Espada is debuting its expanded collaboration with American premium textile brand Zak + Fox.
Northern Irish furniture manufacturer Orior has full reign of the primary bedroom. The Future Perfect staples Chris Wolston and Bower Studios are also unveiling new works. Inaugurating the opening of the extensive kitchen as an exhibition space, the Jugs group show highlights this fundamental typologies hold on a large swathe of contemporary talents. Among the more than 30 exhibited pieces are works by Bari Ziperstein, Ben and Aja Blanc, Chen Chen and Kai Williams, Jason Miller, John Hogan, Karl Zahn, Michiko Sakano, and many others.
